Chromecast built-in is one of the most convenient features on Vizio Smart TVs — and it often goes unnoticed. Unlike the Chromecast dongle you plug into an HDMI port, Chromecast built-in is embedded directly into your Vizio SmartCast TV. That means there’s no extra device to buy, no additional power cord, and no setup process beyond connecting your TV to WiFi. The moment your TV is online, you can start casting videos, music, photos, and entire tabs from your phone, tablet, or laptop in seconds. This guide explains everything you need to know to start casting to your Vizio TV today.

What Is Chromecast Built-In?

Chromecast built-in is Google’s casting technology, integrated directly into Vizio SmartCast TVs at the hardware level. When you cast to a Chromecast device, your phone or laptop sends the media URL to the TV — the TV then streams the content directly from the internet on its own, rather than playing it from your phone and beaming the video wirelessly. This approach has a significant practical advantage: casting does not drain your phone battery or use your phone’s processing power once playback begins. Your phone simply becomes the remote. Here’s what makes Chromecast built-in different from screen mirroring:
  • Casting specific content (YouTube video, Spotify playlist, Netflix movie) — the TV streams it directly. Your phone stays free to do other things.
  • Screen mirroring — your phone’s entire display is broadcast to the TV in real time. More battery-intensive but useful for apps without a Cast button.
Chromecast built-in is available on all Vizio SmartCast TVs. You don’t need a Google account to watch cast content, but you’ll need one to use the Google Home app for setup and device management.

Requirements for Casting

Before you cast for the first time, confirm you have everything in place.

WiFi Connection

Your Vizio TV must be connected to your home WiFi network. Both your TV and casting device must be on the same network. Complete initial TV setup at vizio.com/setup if you haven’t already.

Casting Device

An Android phone, iPhone, iPad, or laptop with Chrome browser installed. The device must be on the same WiFi network as the TV.

Chromecast-Enabled App

A streaming app that supports Chromecast — look for the Cast icon (a rectangle with a WiFi signal in the corner) inside the app. Hundreds of apps support it.

TV Activation

Your Vizio TV should be activated at vizio.com/setup to ensure all SmartCast and Chromecast features are fully unlocked and functioning properly.
Once you start casting, your phone acts as the playback remote. You can adjust volume, pause, rewind, skip to the next episode, or stop casting entirely — all from your phone — without touching the TV remote. Your phone screen does not need to stay on during casting; the TV streams content independently.

How to Cast to Your Vizio TV

Casting from a phone or tablet is as simple as tapping a single button inside your favorite app.
1

Connect Your TV to WiFi

If you haven’t already, connect your Vizio TV to your home WiFi. Press Menu on your remote, go to Network → Network Connection, select your WiFi network, and enter the password. Make sure your phone will be on this same network when you cast.
2

Open a Chromecast-Enabled App on Your Phone

On your Android or iPhone, open any app that supports Chromecast casting — YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, Google Photos, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, and hundreds more all include the Cast icon. You don’t need to install a separate app for Chromecast to work; the functionality is built into each individual streaming app.
3

Tap the Cast Icon

Inside the app, look for the Cast icon — it looks like a small screen with a WiFi signal (three curved lines) in the bottom-left corner. The icon is usually found in the top-right corner of the app’s main screen, or it may appear when you tap the screen during video playback. Tap the Cast icon.
4

Select Your Vizio TV from the List

A list of available Chromecast devices on your network will appear. Your Vizio TV will be listed by its device name (usually something like “Vizio SmartCast TV” or a name you’ve assigned it). Tap your TV’s name to begin casting.
5

Content Plays on Your TV

Within a few seconds, the content will appear on your Vizio TV. Your phone will display a mini playback controller — use it to pause, skip, adjust volume, or stop the cast. The TV streams the content directly from the internet, so your phone can go back to doing other things (texting, browsing, etc.) without interrupting playback.
6

Stop Casting

When you’re done, tap the Cast icon again in the app on your phone and select Disconnect or Stop Casting. The TV will return to the SmartCast home screen. You can also press the Home button on your Vizio remote to end the casting session.

Cast from Chrome Browser

You don’t need a smartphone to cast to your Vizio TV — you can also cast directly from Google Chrome on a Windows PC or Mac laptop.
1

Open Google Chrome on Your Laptop

Launch the Google Chrome browser on your Windows PC or Mac. Make sure your laptop is connected to the same WiFi network as your Vizio TV. Chrome handles all Chromecast communication natively — no extra plugin or extension is needed.
2

Click the Three-Dot Menu

In the top-right corner of the Chrome window, click the three vertical dots (the “More” menu) to open Chrome’s main options menu.
3

Select 'Cast'

Click Cast from the dropdown menu. Chrome will automatically scan your local network for Chromecast-compatible devices and display them in a small popup window.
4

Choose Your Vizio TV

Click your Vizio TV’s name in the Cast popup. By default, Chrome will cast the current browser tab to your TV — whatever is displayed in that tab will appear on your television screen.
5

Choose What to Cast (Tab, Desktop, or File)

Click the dropdown arrow next to the device name in the Cast popup to choose your cast source:
  • Cast tab — casts just the current Chrome tab (default)
  • Cast desktop — mirrors your entire laptop screen to the TV
  • Cast file — lets you cast a video or audio file stored on your computer directly to the TV Select your preferred option and casting will begin immediately.
6

Stop Casting from Chrome

To stop casting, click the Cast icon that appears in the Chrome toolbar (it turns blue while casting is active) and click Stop next to your TV’s name. The TV returns to the SmartCast home screen.
Both your casting device (phone, tablet, or laptop) and your Vizio Smart TV must be on the exact same WiFi network for Chromecast to work. If your router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, make sure both devices are connected to the same band. Guest networks are isolated and will prevent your TV from appearing in the Cast device list.

Apps That Support Casting

Hundreds of apps support Chromecast built-in. Here are some of the most popular ones you can cast from today:
  • YouTube — Cast any video, playlist, or live stream from the YouTube app or website
  • Netflix — Cast movies and TV shows from the Netflix app on Android or iPhone
  • Spotify — Stream music, podcasts, and playlists from your phone through your TV speakers
  • Google Photos — Cast photos and videos from your phone’s camera roll to the big screen
  • Hulu — Cast on-demand and live TV content from the Hulu app
  • Disney+ — Cast Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar content from the Disney+ mobile app
  • Max (HBO) — Cast premium HBO and Warner Bros. content from the Max app
  • Amazon Music — Cast your music library and Amazon Music Unlimited playlists
  • Pandora — Cast radio stations and playlists from the Pandora app
  • Plex — Cast your personal media library (movies, TV, music, photos) to your TV
  • Twitch — Cast live gaming streams and VODs from the Twitch app
  • Google Drive — Cast video files stored in Google Drive directly to your TV

Cast Options: Specific Content vs. Full Screen

It’s useful to understand the two main casting modes so you can choose the right approach for your situation.

Content Casting

Cast a specific video, song, or photo from a supported app. The TV streams the content directly from the internet — your phone is only used as a remote. Battery-efficient and delivers the best quality. This is the recommended method for watching movies or listening to music.

Screen Mirroring / Tab Casting

Mirror your entire phone screen or a Chrome browser tab to the TV. Useful for apps without a dedicated Cast button, websites, presentations, or anything that doesn’t have a native cast option. Your phone’s screen and processor are actively used throughout, which uses more battery.

Chromecast Troubleshooting

If your Vizio TV isn’t showing up in the Cast list, or if casting stops unexpectedly, work through these common fixes.
This is almost always a network issue. Verify that both your phone and your TV are on the same WiFi network (same SSID). On your TV, go to Menu → Network to confirm the connection. On your phone, check the WiFi settings. If your router uses separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands with different names, make sure both devices are on the same one. Restart your router if needed.
A weak or unstable WiFi signal is the typical culprit. Try moving your WiFi router closer to the TV, or use a WiFi range extender. You can also try switching from the 2.4 GHz band (longer range, slower) to 5 GHz (shorter range, faster and more stable). On your TV, go to Menu → Network and reconnect to the 5 GHz band if available.
The TV may not be getting enough internet bandwidth. Check your internet speed using your phone browser and make sure you have at least 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K casting. Reduce the number of devices using the network simultaneously. If the problem persists, check the app’s quality settings — some apps default to lower quality on mobile connections.
Try stopping and restarting the cast. Close the app on your phone completely, reopen it, and cast again. If the problem continues, restart your Vizio TV by pressing Menu → System → Reset & Admin → Soft Power Cycle. After the TV reboots, attempt the cast again.
Not all apps display the Cast icon unless a compatible Chromecast device is detected on the network. Make sure your TV is powered on and connected to WiFi, then reopen the app. If the Cast icon still doesn’t appear, force-close the app and relaunch it. Some apps also require you to be on the playback screen before the Cast icon becomes visible.
This can occur if Chromecast on the TV needs to be reset. On your Vizio TV, press Menu → System → Reset & Admin → Reset TV to Factory Defaults, then reconnect to WiFi and reactivate at vizio.com/setup. Note that a factory reset erases all settings and installed apps, so use this only as a last resort.
Chromecast built-in makes your Vizio Smart TV a seamless extension of every device in your home. Whether you’re casting a YouTube playlist, sharing family photos on the big screen, or presenting a Chrome tab from your laptop, the experience is fast, wireless, and completely free — no extra hardware required.
